Vision Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)

A type of vision insurance plan that usually limits coverage to care from optometrists who work for or contract with the vision health maintenance organization (HMO). An HMO may require you to live or work in its service area to be eligible for coverage.

  • Copay: A flat fee you pay for specific services and products covered under your vision health care plan.

  • Coinsurance: A percentage of the cost that you’re responsible for paying when you receive a specific service or product. People often confuse coinsurance with copays, but they’re different. Your plan may have copays or coinsurance — or it may have both.

  • Vision Examinations: Your vision plan offers free periodic examinations.

Vision Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)

A type of vision health insurance plan that contracts with participating optometrists to create a network. You pay less if you use optometrists that belong to the plan's network. You can use optometrists outside the network for an additional cost.
